This review is from: Gotta Find a Home: Conversations with Street People (Kindle Edition)
Street people, the homeless, panhandlers – they go by various names and are often ignored by the rest of the world but Dennis Cardiff gives them a patient hearing as he brings their stories to life in this first book in a series. From Joy and Chester to Silver and Magdalene, it’s a tale of survival against odds and a grim representative of wrong life choices and uncontrollable circumstances.

Dennis doesn’t sugar coat the truth. The words on the page or the conversations between him and the homeless are honest and without embellishments.

Dennis treats them with respect and concern whether he meets the panhandlers on the streets of Toronto on his way to work or at the Mission where he volunteers as a food server.

Unlike the average commuters, he doesn’t drop them a quarter or two, but chooses to get them breakfast or inexpensive material goods while lending a year to their tales.

You find yourself immersed in their stories. They aren’t perfect and many of them have made wrong choices in life to end up as addicts, victims of abuse or plain misfits. They share many of our concerns in life including money, children, health, work and shelter. You may blame some of them for their choices but it’s hard to remain unaffected.

This book is not an easy read and it’s not even one you can finish in one go. But it stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
