“Good morning, Chuck. I phoned Mariah asking about funeral arrangements for Joy. Mariah said that there was to be an autopsy and she didn’t know when or where the body would be released. I asked her to inform you and Metro. Either of you can pass the information on to me.”

Chuck said, “I’d sure like to know the results of that autopsy report. I wouldn’t be surprised if Big Jake had something to do with her death.”

I said, “I think an autopsy is required any time a person dies at home.”

“It didn’t happen when my old man died. I helped him in the door, because he was drunk as usual, put him to bed, locked the door and went home. That night he died in his sleep. Around five o’clock the next afternoon the police came to see me. I told them what I knew, but that was the end of it, no further investigation.”

“Bruce also suspects Jake. Even if he wasn’t the direct cause of death, the beatings and leaving her with her kidneys to bleed out, is enough reason for a beating. Joy talked him out of it when Jake got out of prison, but now there’s nobody to intercede.Bruce took André down for the same reason. I saw André later, he was hurting.”

Chuck said, “Well we’ll just have to wait. On the lighter side of things, do you know why God made titties? …So men would have something to talk to.

“I had quite a day yesterday. There was somebody moving into my building. They’d unloaded the truck and left everything in my parking space, so I had to take another tenant’s space. I went out to check a couple of times, then thought, This is ridiculous!  Goldie was sound asleep beside the couch so I took my vehicle for a ride along the Parkway. I was on the sidewalk because I was told that I travel too slow. A cop stopped and showed me his badge. He came over and asked me, ‘What kind of a vehicle is this? I’ve never seen one before.’ I told him all about it, said I was disabled and needed it to get me around. He was really interested, he said, ‘Well, I’ll be damned!’. Meanwhile, there was a long lineup of cars behind him. Eventually, he left. Some of the drivers looked at me and gave me the finger, as if I had any choice in the matter.

“Remember me telling you about all the trouble I was having with the TV company? A human actually phoned me, not one of those robotic things. He said, ‘I want to talk to you about your overdue bill.’ I said, to him, ‘You’re not going to talk, you’re going to listen. I told him about the screw up with the bank that started this mess, then I said if you’ve got anything to say, tell me in court. As far as your receiver box you can pick it up tomorrow between 5:45 and 6:00 pm. One minute earlier, I won’t let anybody in. One minute late and I take a hammer to the box and throw it down the garbage chute. I’m not going to miss my evening news. If the judge does fine me I’ll say, ‘I’ll take the jail time instead. Because Goldie is a service dog, she’ll be coming with me.

“They may get a court order and get the landlord to open my apartment, but they’ll be out of luck. I’m not stupid. I have it somewhere they’ll never find it.”

I asked, “Do you have any plans for the weekend?”

“I’ll go to the mall, for coffee with my friends. We’ll all lie about the women we’ve had. I think that if I was with a woman now, my heart would give out.”

I said, “Enjoy your weekend, Chuck. I have to go”

“Bye.”
